Assignment #3 – Analogue Portfolio: Conceptual Foundations

For this assignment, I approached the analogue portfolio as an opportunity to explore how format and concept can deepen personal storytelling. I was drawn to the idea of creating something deconstructed, something that felt less like a traditional portfolio and more like snooping through someone’s closet. I wanted to display my love of fashion and for viewers to feel like they were catching a glimpse of who I am, not just as an artist, but as a person.

My original concept was to physically build a small closet or dresser using cardboard, with hangers displaying my work to create a tactile, handmade feel. After researching references on Pinterest and thinking through the logistics, I decided to simplify the format by using an actual rack and hangers. I made a mock-up of a print of my three strongest works onto shirt-shaped templates, maintaining the “closet” theme while making the portfolio more flexible and portable.

A major influence on my layout choices was the book Tarkovsky—a collection of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film stills, polaroids, and writings. I was drawn to the quiet simplicity and the emotional weight in the presentation. Inspired by this, I opted for a clean layout with grey Arial Regular text, which I tested in various sizes to avoid overwhelming the shirt shape or the work itself.

Spacing and legibility were challenges, but after multiple iterations, I found a balance that felt understated yet intentional. Overall, this prototype sets the tone for a portfolio that’s intimate, curious, and a little unconventional—just like me. The concept is designed for grad show visitors as well as future video clients.

I explored the idea of adding a rug to bring a sense of comfort and interior design to the final concept. I also experimented with different rack colours and adding red to show my personal aesthetic and to represent the aesthetic of my digital portfolio.

Overall I am quite happy with the design and think it is a unique way to show my work as well as my personality. If I were to be using this for grad show I would further explore printing the shirts out in different colours and perhaps adding a side dresser element filled with more works.
