Assignment 1 Part 1/3 – Appropriation

For this part of the assignment we were asked to re-design the front and back of a record cover using pastiche and parody.

I was a bit worried about this project because I had never even touched a vinyl record before, let alone knew how to design one. But once I calmed down and started brainstorming the ideas actually came pretty naturally.

I knew I really wanted to use the band Journey because I like their songs and they have some very stylized and recognizable album covers.

To come up with the other ideas I found a really great website that sold records and searched through their catalog for some inspiration and other popular records I could use.

Some of my initial ideas:

  • (Journey – Don’t Stop Believing) as ‘Clergy – Don’t Stop Believing’ Replacing parts of the original cover with religious motifs (priests, crosses, dove) to create a humorous commentary on religion and how it can aggressively try to prevent people from leaving the church and no longer ‘believing’
  • (Journey – Don’t Stop Believing) as ‘Journey – Stop Believing’ twisting the songs original message around 180 and using the train motif used in the song, as a visual on the cover depicted running someone over 😦
  • (Elvis – If I Can Dream) as ‘Edvard – If I Can Scream’ combining a recognizable song title and an iconic painting as a little twist and comedic element
  • (Little Screams – The Golden Record) Replacing the boys in the water with multiple duplicates of the scream lol
  • (Journey – Freedom) as ‘Jersey – Fandom’ replacing the art with a sports jersey
  • (Fleetwood Mac – Rumours) as Fleetwood Mac – Boomers replacing the young man and woman on the front cover with an old man and woman (boomers) dancing together.
  • (The Legend of Johnny Cash) as the ‘Legend of Trash’. Kinda dumb but it made me giggle.

Below are some quick mock-ups I made of my ideas on Procreate next to the original covers.
